Another Landscaping Challenge is Solved

June 23rd, 2016

When a commercial maintenance customer of SFP Landscaping, Inc. asked us what to do about a big, ugly retaining wall, we put on our thinking cap.  This large concrete block wall is what the entire south facing windows saw from the first floor and it was not very appealing.  Sunlight was limited and the soil was very poor.

SFP offered to install Hydrangea petiolaris, or climbing hydrangea, along the base of the wall.  Climbing hydrangeas are vigorous and cling to walls via aerial rootlets along the stems.  Fragrant white flowers appear in late Spring or early Summer.  Exfoliating reddish brown bark of mature plants is attractive in the winter.  We installed these plants about 2 ½ years ago as small 3 gallon sizes.  These attractive plants actually prefer to be in a partially shaded location – which we had.  Check out these photos from this Spring and see how this was the perfect choice to hide the retaining wall and provide beautiful green foliage for tenants to look at.  Our custom fertilization process really pushed these hydrangeas to a maximum growth rate.

Our horticulturalists, botanist, designers and landscape architects stand ready to assist you with your landscape challenges.  Give us a call – we are here to help you!
